Evocative traces of the ancient Roman city can be rediscovered amongst the streets of the 5VIE, Magenta and Castello district. Now, one of the Milano Design Week epicentres, it invites investigation into the world of design amongst the historic buildings and alleyways to be explored on foot, in neighbourhoods where the atmosphere is still all to be discovered.

We have made it easier for you by selecting the not-to-be-missed events.

Mother: Robert Wilson's installation for Michelangelo's Pietà Rondanini

Where: Museo Pietà Rondanini - Castello Sforzesco, Piazza Castello

The Salone del Mobile.Milano moves out into the heart of the city with an unmissable installation: Mother by Robert Wilson at Castello Sforzesco.

Wilson, a master in the creative use of light, creates his own vision of Michelangelo's last unfinished masterpiece, the Pietà Rondanini, highlighting its universal and timeless value in dialogue with Stabat Mater, a medieval prayer reinterpreted in a vocal and instrumental version by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.

“Light is what gives shape to space. Without light, space does not exist. Albert Einstein said that light is the measure of all things. For myself it is always the starting point”. Robert Wilson discusses his work and, on this occasion, he shifts between reverential awe and admiring wonder in front of the Pietà, creating an immersive experience in the rooms of the Ospedale Spagnolo at the Castello Sforzesco.

The exhibition is open from April 6th to May 18th with admission by reservation at the Castello ticket office. The 30-minute sequence of music, lights and images is screened in loop. Live performances of the Stabat Mater are held from April 6th to 13th.

5Vie Design Week

For this 2025 edition, 5VIE broadens its exhibition itinerary: in addition to the historic venues of Palazzo Correnti (via Cesare Correnti 14) and SIAM (via Santa Marta 18), new in the line-up are the Cavallerizze of via Olona 4, at the Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology.

Enjoy exploring one of Milano’s oldest neighbourhoods to discover cool projects and workshops, featuring designer & collectable design and high-end artisan craft, which open up to the international world adhering to the chosen theme of invisible harmonies: design as a threshold between matter and intuition. With over 70 events, 5VIE offers visitors an immersive journey to discover the subtle connections between the visible & the invisible, form & meaning, object & intuition.

Palazzo Litta in Corso Magenta 24 hosts Design Variations in its spaces: a collective exhibition that unites historic companies, emergent brands and projects from the Politecnico di Milano design students, which will be exhibited under the covered sottoportico. MoscaPartner Variations by the MoscaPartners Group: an exhibition that follows the common thread of Migrations, it welcomes selected companies and design projects that focus on sustainability and the environment, without renouncing the techniques and traditions of the participants’ places of origin.

Of particular interest is the site-specific installation Nobody Owns the Land: Earth, Forest, Mahk by Byoung Soo, a work that revolves around the current concept of land as a place of conflict, and which is hosted inside the Cortile d’Onore.

In the 5Vie headquarters in via Cesare Correnti, don’t miss Girotondo by Sara Ricciardi x Rometti and Nodus: a creative investigation into love told through the eyes of children. Vases, rugs in bright and vibrant colours and drawings will welcome visitors in this space where you can discover and feel love in its purest form.

At the Cavallerizze in Via Olona, be enchanted by Metamorphism, from design duo Julie and Jesse, experimental research that unfolds in a site-specific pyramidal structure created from elements of the most archaic material in the world: ceramic. This deceptively simple installation conceals profound meanings of ascent, deconstruction of hierarchies and contemporary modular structures.

Other 5VIE initiatives

The 5VIE design week program is also enhanced by the exhibition entitled Naturalia by Buccellati that offers an immersive exploration of nature and local craftsmanship: discover Buccellati Silver Nature through site-specific installations and immersive soundscapes that create three distinct natural environments. The entire design is enhanced by a botanical installation with flowers and vegetation by Mary Lennox Studio.

In via Bernardino Luigi 12 don’t miss KAIKADO 150, an installation of 150 bespoke tea caddies, accompanied by live demonstrations of their creation by five Japanese artisans who have travelled to Milano Design Week.

Graffito Di Luce

Where: Cloister and Sacristy of Bramante in Santa Maria delle Grazie, Via Caradosso 1

In the Cloister of Frogs of the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie, one of the most beautiful hidden corners of Milano, Luca Trazzi, in collaboration with FAN EUROPE Lighting, presents a new installation inspired by the salient elements attributed to Bramante, architect of the Basilica’s tribune.

Drawing inspiration from a decorative graffiti in a plaster in the cloister depicting flowers, Trazzi has created a series of lamps and light structures that play with light and shadow. The lamps, with a rounded and radial design, emit a warm light, creating luminous paths in the portico and transforming the garden into a theatre of light, with flower-shaped light elements that intertwine between columns and foliage.

Inside the Sacristy of the Basilica, a straight path is defined by two parallel rows of floor lamps, also floral, which accompany the visitor in an evocative atmosphere.
