The Italian tax code (Codice Fiscale), is a unique identification code made of letters and numbers that is required for various activities such as opening a bank account, signing a lease, and conducting financial transactions. It is free to obtain, and it is valid for a lifetime.
It looks like this: MLNYSE17A41F205U
Outside Italy, you can get the tax code at the Italian Consulate competent for your place of residence.
If you go and sign your contratto di lavoro at Sportello Unico, the tax code will be given to you by the Prefecture.
Once arrived in Italy, you can obtain the tax code by visiting any local office of the Revenue Agency (Ufficio territoriale) and submitting form AA4/8 to a local office.
The application must be properly justified and accompanied by a valid document (passport or identity card valid for international travel) and proof of your legal entry to Italy (Visa and Italian border stamp or if you come from a Schengen country, declaration of presence made at a Police station).
N.B. non-European citizens will receive a temporary tax code (a numerical code) from the Immigration Desk (Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione), present in every Prefecture and responsible for issuing entry clearance to foreign citizens applying for a residence permit for employment or family reunification.
The code that you will receive is not legally valid, therefore you will need to go to any local office of the Revenue Agency to obtain the official one.
Download the AA4/8 pdf application form and open it with a pdf reader (such as the free Adobe Acrobat DC) that allows you to fill it in. Alternatively, you can print it out and fill it in clear capital letters.
