Milano has five underground lines: M1 Rossa (Red), M2 Verde (Green), M3 Gialla (Yellow), the M4 Blu (Blue) and M5 Lilla (Purple) connecting the city to the suburbs. Besides the underground, the Passante Ferroviario (suburban trains) connects Milano to the province, to other cities in Lombardy and outside the region.


The public transport in Milano is managed by Azienda Trasporti Milanesi - ATM.

Purchase your travel pass online

Taxcode needed

To obtain your preferred pass fare, you must acquire a pass priced at 10€, which remains valid for 4 years. The purchase of this card can be accomplished through either online channels or by visiting any ATM Point office in person.


Select the card profile that aligns with your situation from the options available: Ordinary, Under 26, Under 27, Senior, Under 14, or Under 11. The electronic card is available for purchase either empty or pre-loaded with an annual or monthly pass. For individuals under the age of 18, only parents or guardians are permitted to make purchases on their behalf.


  • Online purchase (only for valid Tax code holders)

  1. Visit https://areariservata.atm.it/ and complete the registration process. Log in and click on the “Request a new card" button, ensuring you have your tax code readily available.
  2. Place your date of birth and click on “Enter the date” button.
  3. Select the pass below (Regular, Under26 etc…) and click on “Continue”.
  4. Select the pass that best aligns with your requirements (monthly, yearly, pass unloaded).
  5. Fill out the application form with your personal details.
  6. Choose your preferred method of receiving the pass (at home or via self-service Tessy machines). TIP: Opt for self-service printers (Tessy machines) at main metro stations, it’s much faster.
  7. Complete the payment using credit/debit card or PayPal.
  8. If you chose the self-service option, you will receive a QR code via mail that you will need to use at the Tessy machine to withdraw your pass.

N.B. If you submit your application after the 20th of the month, the option to select a pass for the upcoming month is unavailable. In such cases, you can only choose passes for subsequent months.

If you require a pass for the immediate next month, please opt for an empty pass during the initial selection. Once you have obtained the pass, you can proceed to purchase a pass-through various channels, including the ATM app, your personal account on the website, vending machines in metro stations, or at an authorized reseller.

Starting in January 2025, you’ll have the option to subscribe via the ATM app and travel using only your phone. Keep in mind that your travel pass can be either physical or digital, but not both simultaneously. While the digital card offers convenience, we strongly recommend keeping a physical card as a backup in case of issues like low battery, phone malfunctions, or connection problems.

  1. Download the ATM app.
  2. Register (a Tax Code is required).
  3. Go to Menu > Buy > Travel Passes > Digital Card.
  4. Fill in the request and upload a photo.
  5. Purchase your first travel pass from the Buy menu.
  6. Find your digital travel pass in the Wallet menu of the app.

Download the ATM app to get live updates on the transportation network status and secure your call number for the ATM Point counters to obtain your pass.

To book a call number for a new card:

  • Open the app and go to "Services" in the bottom menu.
  • Select "ATM Point/Book an appointment", then choose "New Card Request."
  • Pick your preferred ATM Point, select a date and time slot, and confirm your booking to receive your ticket.
  • Arrive a few minutes early at the ATM Point—your number will appear on the call screens at the scheduled time, allowing you to skip the queue.

On the day of your appointment bring with you this documents

  • A passport-sized photo
  • Your ID or passport
  1. Obtain the "Richiesta di rilascio tessera elettronica" application form and complete it with your personal details, date, and sign it. If you don’t have a Tax Code, the operator will provide a temporary one.
  2. Proceed to the counter, pay the €10 fee, and receive your electronic card.
  3. You may also request the operator to top up your card with a monthly or yearly fare.

Fares

To travel within the urban area of Milano (Mi1 zone) you can choose from these 4 options:

  • monthly pass for under 27: € 22 (valid for unlimited journeys during the month of validity)
  • annual pass for under 27: € 200 (valid for unlimited journeys for one year)
  • ordinary monthly pass: € 39 (valid for unlimited journeys during the month of validity)
  • ordinary annual pass: € 330 (valid for unlimited journeys for one year)


An Urban Travel Card allows you to ride across the whole ATM urban transportation network (within the borders of the city), as well as the urban portion of the S suburban railway lines (Trenord and Passante Ferroviario) departing from Cadorna, Garibaldi, Porta Venezia, and other underground stations.


Towns surrounding Milano, (e.g.San Donato, Segrate, Gessate, Rozzano, Sesto San Giovanni, Corsico, Novate Milanese, Monza) are out of the urban fare: a suburban pass must be purchased depending on the number of zones travelled (from Mi1 up to Mi9 zones).

Recharge your ATM electronic card

When issued, the electronic card is “empty” and should be charged with your chosen travel card. You can top up your card with a monthly pass or an annual pass:


  1. At automatic machines inside metro stations
  2. At any tobacconist’s or newsstand that sells transportation tickets
  3. Online on the ATM website or on the ATM app and then on the dedicated machine next to the metro turnstiles

Opening hours

The underground lines M1, M2, M3, M4 start around 05.30 a.m. and end around 12.30 a.m.; the M5 starts at 05.40 a.m. and stops at midnight.

At night, night bus services and underground replacement bus services are in operation.

According to each line, trams are in operation approximately from about 04.30 a.m. to 02.30 a.m. and buses from about 05.30 a.m. to 01.45 a.m. Info here.

On some lines you can still find the historic trams from the 20s operating, adding a certain retro flair.

Lines 90 and 91 (external ring-road, 40 km) are operating 24/7.

BikeMi with your ATM card

If you have an annual public transportation subscription active for at least 72 hours, you are eligible for a discount on the annual BikeMi subscription with the following rates:


  • Standard annual subscription for €24 instead of €36
  • Under 27 annual subscription for €12 instead of €36

To apply the discount during the purchase process, select the "Apply ATM Discount" option. You will need to enter the following information:


  • The identification number of your ATM card (A)
  • The serial number of your ATM card (B)
  • Your tax code

Once these steps are completed, the system will verify the information and apply the discount to the final price.


Your annual BikeMi subscription can be linked to any valid ATM card, which you can use as an alternative to the app for checking out bikes by simply tapping the card at the station terminal.


To link the card, just access your profile through the app, choose the "Public Transport Card" option, and enter the required details.

Kick Scooter Sharing

There are several companies in Milano that offer kick scooter sharing: here’s the list of operators.


Circulation

  • The maximum speed of the vehicles is 20 km/h.
  • In pedestrian areas this speed must be limited to 6 km/h.
  • Circulation is prohibited in areas with critical issues from a safety point of view (for example on river stone pavements).

Parking

  • In the Navigli area, the pick-up and drop-off of vehicles is permitted exclusively in the areas designated for parking bicycles and motorbikes.
  • In the remaining area it is possible to park exclusively:
    - in the areas intended for parking bicycles and motorbikes
    - on the side of the road, where it is not expressly prohibited
